Default Header/Exhaust choices

Please help me decide on headers. I've searched through the forums (and parts houses), but can't seem to confirm what will fit my '69 convertible, 351W (2 bbl) with FMX tranny. Additionally: power steering, A/C and power brakes. I want to ditch the original single exhaust (probably with 2.5" duals?) and thought I'd add headers while I'm at it. I'd rather not "massage" the headers, trans. linkage or firewall...and I don't have $700 bucks for JBAs (like to keep the header cost below $300) Any recommendations?

Thanks!

headman #88300 fit nicely, you will need the PS drop bracket as well, if you sticking with a stock or mild 351w go a 2 1/4 exhaust with a crossover pipe, budget and sound wise the summit turbos, thrush turbos or better dynomax super turbos will sound nice but not too loud, might as well ditch the 2v intake and carb as it will lean out with the new exhaust, if it is stock throw on an edelbrock performer and 600 cfm edelbrock carb or a 625 road demon with annular boosters, adding the new exhaust system along with carb/intake and air cleaner will probably add an additional 35-40 hp and if you drive normally about 2-4 mpg's, add an electronic ignition and open up the gap to 45-50 and you will gain more drivabilty, throttle response and mileage.

Give the guys @ JBA a call. When I was talking to them a few months ago the 700.00 ones were ceramic coated. They had their regular Stainless Steel ones for 499.00 and was told that they could likely get down to 425.00 on them by contacting one of their resellers for me. This was for their "JBA Mid-length Headers for 289/302/351W Mustang" product about 1/2 way down that page.

From what i seen jba are the best made headers i have seen nice thick header flanges and they fit.I'd bite the bullet and buy them or http://www.fordpowertrain.com/FPAindex/headers1.htm but there's are 550 up.

Thanks for all the replies, they're very helpful. I forgot to add I've ordered the pertronix ignitor II and flame thrower II ignition bits. (driveability is a big concern-looking for upgrades that add performance and mileage or reliability) If my next big change will be AOD tranny, will this affect fitment of any of the header suggestions? (I put a five speed in my '65, but a manual in miserable DC traffic gets old)

I've got heddmans on mine and I love em. Some people think they sound "tinny" but, I don't see it. Thehe rest of mine is basically "stock"...2 1/4 thru glasspacks and a stock muffler. I like the whole set-up but, it's kind of quiet for me sometimes..

Not to steal a thread but, does anyone know if the stock muffler acts like an x-pipe? It is a single muffler but has 2 "ins" and 2 "outs". I had it off and just ran through the glass packs a while ago and I swear, I picked up some ponies when I put it back on. It may just be that since it is quiet...I put more foot in it though.

I just happened across this on eBay and though of you and this thread...

Both really good prices I'd say for complete stainless steel setups. I have no idea what the JBA mufflers sound like. Wish I did.

JBA 65-70 Mustang 351W 5.8 Mid L SS Headers EFI or Carb
Price is 409.97 + 18.07 (to NJ)

JBA 65-70 Mustang Dual Rear Exhaust Muffler System
Price is 398.30 + 31.28 (to NJ)
