Brake problems 1965
Hello from France,
I have imported 2 1965 6cyl stangs and have some issues to repair, so ill be asking a few questions.
First one is brakes.
How do i tell if i have power brakes or not? both cars have drums
also on one car I have a very inconsistent pedal. one moment good brakes, next moment the pedal slowly goes to the floor, im thinking the master cylinder is duff. I bled the whole system and the oil in there looked like old engine oil it was so old also with loads of air! im thinking the seals could be damaged on the master cylinder. any ideas?
thanks for any help

Do you have a power booster/master cylinder or just single master cylinder connected to fire wall? I would probably bet on just single master cylinder which means no power breaks. I would do a front disc brake swap and include a power booster/master cylinder.
Make sure to check out the various parts vendors. Mustangs Unlimited, Laurel Mountain Mustangs, National Parts Depot.
Their pictures can help you identify things, which can be a great help.
Good luck with the cars!

Hiya there, greetings from a german who lives in Ireland.
First of all best of luck woth your cars.
to differentiate if you have power brakes or not you will need to check if you have a booster between the master cylinder and the firewall
with the pedal issue try bleeding the brakes first before doing anything else.
If you never checked on the state of your brakes I'd suggest taking of the drum and inspecting the parts like shoes and brake cylinder

the master cylinder connects directly to the bulkhead in the engine bay but what i dont understand is that when you run the engine it feels like they have power because they seem to feel different when the engine runs, i guess it could be vibration causing some fluid blow by on the seals?
the brakes are drums all round and i have completely bled the system, the brakes are a little better than before but still have this odd feeling which makes me think oil is leaking past the seals in the master cylinder which seems to happen some times more than others, the sysem isnt losing oil and there are no leaks
