At some point I may do this mod, either on a '66 or some other old car. Hence my interest in the topic.

What I see up front is that you need to stick pretty close to the OE mechanical advantage and cable travel or else either the effort will be excessive or the travel insufficient. A pull-up handbrake handle that is substantially shorter than the OE lever may not be able to satisfy both conditions for everybody.

I definitely agree with using a floor reinforcement plate of some sort as in the cprstreetmachines link. Where do you think that the force that our "benches 350 lbs" member puts into the handle goes? (Hint: it does not all go into the cable, and the cable force may even add to the handle force.)

That's if you stick with rear drum brakes. With rear discs you might be in for a bit more work to get the effort and travel good.
