Default Hood Mounted Tach

I noticed in some places such as CJ's have hood mounted Tachs for 65-70. Was there a factory hood mounted tach?

Good question.
I think if there was it was on Shelby's or race only models.
As far as from the factory I don't think so.
Mopar was big into hood mounted tachs.

Uncle has one on his 400 4-sp Tempest Convertible. Love it.

I took this paragraph out of Modified Mustangs and Fords. It concerns the hood tach for the 1970 Mustang. As you'll read it states the hood tach was a Ford part that was available for mounting on the Mustang hood. Cars that came with regular gauge packages (no tachs) would have these mounted by the dealer. So it was a dealer option and not a factory one. BTW, alot of options you see on an old Mustang were actually dealer options. You'd be surprised at what the dealer offered back then.

"Especially groovy is the hood tach Tom installed when the restoration was complete. The tachometer was available for Mustangs with standard instrumentation from the local dealer's parts department. Some folks mistake this tachometer for the hood tach common to Pontiac GTOs of the era. But this one has a Ford part number and a history with Ford service departments way back when."

A hood mounted tach was a dealer option in 1969, and rare. I've seen them on cars at shows, and my buddy Paul has a NOS in the box for $600. They make a replica (The Paddock?) for under $300.

It's a gauge. I have an Autotech 8000 and it lights up. But my car is heavy modded, so the aftermarket gauge blends in. In a mostly stock Mustang, a regular gauge on the hood like that would look odd. If you want a low profile hood mounted tach (they were orig. body color) that says FORD on the face, the 69 Mustang hood tach replica would look orig and OK for a gen 1, IMO, if you can't find a '65.

I saw a top of dash mount one on ebay not too long ago. It was rectangular with a sweep style gauge. Odd looking.
