Default Picking a transmission

So I am building a DD out of my 65 FB and am def wanting to go to with a manual tranny. There are so many out there, what would be the best choice for a DD pushing around 200-250 hp.

I'd recommend a T5

I've def seen plenty of T5 articles everywhere and that was the route I was thinking. Just didn't know if there might have been a better option. I was initially thinking about putting a 6speed in but I am thinking a T56 would be a bit under utilized for the HP I would be producing.

That, and it would be an incredible PITA to install. A T5 is a very easy conversion in your car. It requires some conversion parts, but no fabrication. All parts (and even the tranny) can be had through Modern Driveline.

A T56 is a big transmission and will not fit in your car as-is. You have to either raise the tunnel and relocate the shifter hole, or use a drop crossmember, just to get it to fit. If you use a drop crossmember, you have to keep an eye on pinion angle, as even a small change in pinion angle can cause vibration issues and burn up u-joints. And then you have to find conversion parts for it. Since it's not a common swap, those parts aren't as easy to find. Modern Driveline might be able to help, but not too sure on that.

Then there's the fact that your car won't be able to go fast enough to properly utilize a 6sp. Realize that most cars that came with this tranny are capable of reaching speeds above 140mph. A 5sp is more than enough for what you're doing.

Thanks everyone...always my number one source for info. Sounds like the t5 is gonna be the way to go....One thing though...I would like to move the shifter back a bit using a remote shifter handle.

I am assuming someone has used this item...Any feedback on this product would be awesome.

I played with the demo in the store a while back. Not a terribly complicated piece of equipment, but I was impressed nonetheless. I'll be getting one when I do my TKO conversion.

WOOPs,,,, You're not quite done being "the decider" yet. There are several types of T-5s. The ones for v-8 cars are built stronger and later models (for Cobras) are the strongest. A great site for explainations of the various transmissions:
www.ddperformance.com

I went with the TKO-500 because the 351Cs torque output (stock is 370) would be marginally too much for even the T-5 WC. But it
sounds like you have a 289 or a strong I6, either is perfect with a T-5. Modern Driveline also supplied my clutch cable+linkage, I'm pleased with the results.

With 200-250hp, you're not likely to break even a non-WC T5. I don't see any reason to trouble him with any other options. Any T5 out of a V8 78-93 Mustang would work fine.
