Thanks for the quick reply.
After doing a little more investigation, I found that National Parts Depot actually sells a replacement solid state CVR (P/N 10804-1E) for $59.95. I think I'll give that one a try.

Buy one for 59.95 or make your own for about 5 bucks.

Dude, the LM7805 is about the cheapest IC you can buy! Here are 50 from China for $11.00 (if you will buy from China), or go to Radio Shack and buy one for a couple dollars.

See, even I can recommend things that don't cost a small mortgage!

Yah, but Mortman said he didn't know if it worked and he was having problems with it.
Has anybody actually built one of these with a LM7805 and had it work okay? If so, I'll try building one also.
Thanks-

Finaly figuared out why my gauges peg out, mini tac needs a piece of ruber/cork between the tac body and the gauge pod casing. any way the moded CVU did not work, i must have done somthing wrong.

Here is a detailed how to article with parts I put together when I built mine. I could not find anyone who had wrote up something so I took pictures of everything when I built it
The capacitors I added are probably overkill for filtering out the noise but it was a couple of dollars and this way I know spikes wont damage the circuits. The impedance of the circuit does not require a clean signal though.

I think you may need a heat sink for longevity, that little voltage regulator will get hot. I see that you are using the old case as a heat sink, I'm just not sure that's adequate. For a couple of dollars you can get a small heat sink from Radio Shack.
