Default modifing the CVR

I have seen a modification to the CVR, some sort of a replacement solid state resistor or something like that. Have heard it works like a charm, any one do the mod? how is it accomplished? Figured while i have my dash apart i may as well get-r-done

Constant Voltage Unit/Regulator . I've done it, really easy, I can't report results because my sending units are dead. But I did get a constant 5V out. And those metal tabs are a PITA to bend.

What is it conditioning/supplying voltage for? Educate me please, I understand the overall purpose of it is but what it does for and where it is in our cars I don't know.

It takes the ~12V from the battery and converts it to 5V (although I've heard OEM Ford CVRs are closer to 6V) to power the instrument panel. Fuel, Oil Pressure and Engine Temp to be specific, that's all it powers so if those gauges all read 0 you know it's the voltage reg.

I've gone through two original CVRs now. I want to change to the solid state method, but this thread leaves me hanging about how to do it. Is there a new solid state CVR I can purchase somewhere, or what?
Thanks-

Dave K.
