Default 91 HO cylinder heads..worth it?

been a while since ive been on here. hope all is well with everyone. anyway, guys got a pair of HO cylinder heads from 91 mustang. $50.
since im having a little trouble locating a good set of GT40s, would these be better then my stock 1973 ones (im going to think so??) or mabeye just to practice porting and polishing on, putting em on till i find a GT40 set or somthing and port those. for $25 bucks a piece, its tempting.

Maybe. Depends on whether or not you want to invest in some pedastal mounted rockers and new pushrods, and on what size your combustion chambers are. If you're willing to make the investment and you've already got large-chamber heads (which I believe you do), go for it. E7 (1987) and up heads have significantly improved exhaust passages compared to the older heads. Not to say they're really great, but they don't suck, which is better than what you've got. With a little bit of home porting, they should work just fine for you.

yes they are worth 50$ if he pays you gas money to haul them away
but in all seriousness they arent anything special if you do get them plan on sending them here if you want to see any benefit he is the man when it comes to them

They are'nt great, but they are certainly better than what you have. Porting them is quite simple and effective plus detailed instructions on the procedure are readily available. I use a set of Crane Energizer roller lifters on mine which work fine if you don't plan on hammering the engine excessively. I say "go for them". He would probably take less than $50 for the pair. Best regards. John--Las Vegas.

Not really worth the time IMHO. If they have alot of miles on them you'll sepnd some $$ on them. Ports are a little better, not enough to feel a difference. Save the money that you'll spend on the heads, pushrods etc and put it towards a better set.

Why do you want GT40's?

I think you guys are ragging on the heads a little much. Early stock sbf exhaust ports SUCK. They're absolutely horrible. I port-matched my current heads and sat them next to my original heads and my jaw hit the ground, they're that bad. By the time the E7 heads came out, Ford had mostly fixed this problem. They're still not quite as good as GT40 heads, but they're much better than the stock heads in stock form. With a little port work (which would require a die grinder, not a drill) they'd flow significantly better than his stock heads. Assuming he doesn't lose any compression in the swap, I'm sure he'd notice a gain. It'd be like taking his stock heads, porting out the exhaust, then dropping them right back on.

Of course, this assumes that there aren't any burned valves and the block mating surfaces are flat. If not, a rebuild is going to cost a couple hundred.

Find out how much work they need. If they're gonna need a rebuild then it's not really worth it, just save up and buy some good heads, even used ones such as TFS or AFRs or something. If you absolutely need a head cuz your's is cracked then yeah, or if they don't need any work and you can port them a bit, then you can, but the time and money is prolly better invested somewhere other than a stock head swap(unless it were GT40's).
