Default Coolant Leaking - Pics

The two hoses that run to the firewall, one of them has a little device spliced into the middle of it. Coolant leaks out of there. Seen here:

First question: what exactly is it? a filter?

Second question, can i run those hoses on top of the intake or will that be too much heat?

wanna clean up your engine compartment go to the junkyard and get the coolant transfer tubes off of a 1986-1993 mustang, lincoln mark 8 etc it will run along the top of the intake from the front of the motor to the rear.

That looks like a vacuum operated heater control valve to me. Replacements are pretty cheap and that one looks like it is as old as your car. Here is a picture:

It's $19 from Summit:

correction, the leak was not coming from the device itself, but the hose was cracked underneath...couldn't see it. but at least now i know what the hell it is.

anyone care to post some pics of how they route their heater hoses? id rather not have mine dangling down the side next to the headers.

As mentioned, you can use the metal heater tubes from a 5.0 to really clean up your engine bay.

Here's how mine connect from the tube to the heater core

Here's my old motor, you can see how the rubber hoses run along the intake to the back. The mechanical valve was replaced with an all plastic unit that won't corrode.

I had coolant leaking problems today too... I think my hoses started leaking because my car was sitting so long but it appears they have sealed up, no more leaks. Just now my passenger carpet is soaked

I really liked that coolant tube from the 5.0, if I ever go to the junkyards again with my friend I'll try to find one.
