If your going to do a stroker use a new 5.0 block so you can have a roller cam. Crane makes a conversion cam for early small blocks but if your doing that much just get a newer block.

i dont have the money for a newer block and i could really care less as to what kind of cam i have to run... plus i could use a conversion kit if i wanted to

They are the same, the 289 block will work. And like you said, the earlier blocks are thicker. Why not a 347 though?

A 331 is best for reliability due to a smaller bore, keeping the cylinder walls thicker. Also a 331 has a shorter stroke, less chance of something going haywire.

347, 363, and 331 have the same bore.

yeah bore is the same, but the 289 blocks are supposed to have shorter cylinder skirts so a 331 would be a better choice than a 347.

that being said, you can make gobs of power with your 289 without stroking it.... that 1000 bucks can get you a kickass set of heads
