Here are some pics. One pic is when I finished repairing the driver's side and the other is the passenger side before I began fixing them.

so do they absorb some of the torque and strengthen the frame? Is that what they are?

yes they hold the car together when torqued by the engine, they are important and if they are only on the drivers side of your car, and you are looking at any kind of performance please weld them up to the passenger side, from what ive heard they are easy to add in. and well worth it overall

If i remember right 67 had a driver side one but big block used both sides and 68 on got both. They make the end of the frame rail wider so its hard to twist it.

They help keep the frame rails from twisting. Instead of just having the frame rail mount to the unit body perpendicularly, Like a (T), the TB triangulates the floor support (T/) by tying it in to the rocker, adding greater rigidity.

I know the 67 verts had both the driver and passenger side torque boxes. Not sure about the BBs.

polo708... here is a pic of a torque box added to a 67 coupe. Before there was nothing in this section (look at yours) where as on the drivers side you'll see the torque box as in this image. If your doing metal work and have welding in your future I'd suggest added the passengers side. It adds a great deal of extra stiffness and strength to the car. In 68 they were installed in all models.

The text might be a bit small and reads "This is the torque box added to a 67 Mustang coupe on the passengers side. It is 3 sided. This side, a flat lower section and a sloped section running under the toeboard."

here is what a box looks like..
