Default 65 technical info PLEASE HELP!!!

Can anybody out there please help point me in the direction of some good reference books on the 65? The more I look into this, it looks like mine has a little of both of the differences between the early and late 65 models. I've ordered all kinds of parts magazines to try to figure some stuff out, and now it is getting me even more confused. Is there a way on the VIN number or something to tell me which it is?

Here's an example of my confusion.

I have the hood and hood bumpers that the early 65 had, and the some of the books I've read say it had a generator, not an alternator. But the guy I bought it from had the alternator in the trunk and said that's what was in it.

Thanks for any help, and I'm so stoked to get this thing up and running by next summer!

(PS I bought this without the engine are tranny to reference.)

The 260 V8 engine was what was mostly used in the early 64 1/2, but they also had the I6 and the 289. After August 17th, the line workers kept using left over parts, so you probably have some early parts along with after August 17th parts. They also used a generator. Dedode it to see what engine you have. Also check the build date. If it was before August of 64, then you have a 64 1/2. There are quite a few differences in them from the 65's. Read here for the differences and other information of what you may have. http://www.midcomustang.com/1964half.shtml

Thanks for all the info guys. Lots of good info on the links that helped clerify a few things, and is going to help down the line. I'm going to see if I can get more specific info by using the unit number off the VIN.

Yep, that VIN will explain a lot about what you have, but won't tell you whether you have pre-August or post-August parts on it or not. You would need a buck tag for that, and even that won't tell you everything. It would be nice if you could find a build sheet. But, even if you found one under the carpet or under the seat, or under the dash, it would probably be all brown and unreadable and still would not have all the info you need. Just get the date it was built off the VIN and order parts according to that date. The Mustang parts guys usually are smart enough to know what part you need. But, after getting the part and it isn't quite right, just send it back and get the "other" one. I have had to do that several times, as mine was built in September and I have a few pre-August parts on it.
