Smell it out of the exhaust. Also when car turned off you could smell the fumes from the engine bay. Sometimes my plugs would have some gas on them also.

My only suggestion is to set timing at 12 deg adv at idle...when you rev the engine it should move to around 30ish i think.
are you sure your damper wheel has only 1 timing mark on it?
something is way off...it could be rich too...try to set timing to 12 at idle ...then see what it does

is it vac advance? if so, it really only matters at idle cause itll do its own thing cause it advances itslef

It is spark advace, but it doesn't work. It has no vacuum for some reason.

Spark advance dizzy with a vacuum advance carb. But vacuum doesn't work on dizzy.

could you explain spark adv?
I know of vac and mechanical advance that using rotation speed.

I really don't know anything about spark advance, just know the dizzy has that instead of vacuum.
