Default First Post - 65 Mustang

I have been lurking the past month and thought it was about time to introduce myself. This is my second Mustang. My first was a 1966, but it was totaled almost 15 years ago. My father also had two 1966’s, so I am not new to Mustangs.

I purchased this 1965 in December and paid very little for it. It is a standard 289 2v coupe. As you can tell by the pictures, it needs a lot of work. I believe it was sitting in a barn since 1991. It did not come with an engine, grill, or hood. It has a 3 speed but I plan to replace it with something else.

I have 95% of the interior stripped out and will start on the outside panels soon. I plan to have it media blasted in March. Here are my current ideas for it. I am sure that I will change my mind often.

Ivy Green paint
Black standard interior
302 maybe stroked to 331
T5 transmission
15” Torq Thrust D (already purchased)
215/60R15 BFG Traction T/A’s (already purchased)
Front disc swap

Is anyone on VMF a member of the Mustang Club of Houston? I joined and will be going to my first meeting next Sunday.

So far the site has been great and informative.

Steve

Welcome, looks like fun.

My car was originally a 2v, Ivy Green 289 with a three speed. (now a 302, 4v, 4 speed).

Welcome aboard. We look forward to seeing pics of your progress. No engine can be a real advantage at this point. Clear access to the engine compartment. How are the floors?

welcome. your plan is pretty sound so far. I can only recommend that T5. although be careful with that when you have a 331 stroker in mind. T5 (not Z-spec) is rated for around 300HP/torque max. will do as daily driver but if you are a throttle lunatic you'll prbably tear the thing with such an engine. maybe Tad can say more. He's got that combo

forgot to mention. is that car original 6cylinder or V8? you can tell by VIN. reason I'm saying this is that you will nearly guaranteed (just like me) blow the rearend with V8 in front and 6banger rearaxle in back. you can easily tell 6bangers by 4lug wheels if nothing was changed you might know

There seems to be only surface rust on the floors. The pictures make it look worse than it is. How can I tell for sure? Here are some pics.

It is/was originally a C code V8.

Floors look pretty bad. I guess if you can poke through the floors with a screwdriver then they are bad. I would sand that down good, and POR15 it.
