Default Engine Paint

Curious,
Engine paint, If you get another year engine and drop it in your car, what should you paint your engine? The year of the engine? The year of the car? or just wing it?
My first engine was the light early Ford Blue, But I want to do it for a 65 engine, to match my car. But i can not think what the color needs to be. Is it a Black Block, Head and oil pan, valve covers and intake gold or something?

The color depends on the engine size, type, and year. For my 1969 351W, the color originally was Corporate Blue which is a medium dark Ford Blue. I used Duplicolor engine paint #1621 which is not as dark as "Dark Ford Blue" 1606 but not as light as "Ford Blue" 1601. Some guys prefer the Dark Ford Blue 1606, but I thought the Old Ford Blue matched better. 289s and I6s were different colors though.

What engine are you painting?

I6s were Ford Blue and Ford Red.

65 - Red
66 and up - Blue.

In 65 the V8 long block was semi gloss black with gold valve covers and gold air cleaner base and gloss black snorkel.
Unless you had a HiPo 'K' code, then you got a chrome 14" air cleaner.
