Default Engine Decoding

I have a block that I can not seem to find any casting number off of it. All I can see in the engine top near the center of the lifters area, is a "YYY" and a 31. Its supposed to be a '89 from what the guy said, but I have no other proof.
Just to say, Towards the back of the block, on top, there is no number, my 68 has a number there and near the starter / passanger side.
I can not see any other numbers on the starter / passenger side.

Thanks

ya you're right. all the old ford blocks have the casting number hidden at the starter (propably the most stupid location for it).
most big blocks have it on passegnger side at the front.
do you have the engine removed from car?
at the front of block where the block meets the head there's usually a little hump with the date code. like 6H11 etc)
mayeb it's not even a ford block. maybe some other manufacturer that produces ford blocks ?!

I will check when i get home, but yes, the engine is on an engine stand. I will look at the front of where the head meets the block. Let you know what I find out!
