San Diego doesnt see many of those..
That is exactly what I do with my functional '69 scoop hood, but we do not see much rain these days in South Texas either. It provides some fresh cool air into the carb at speed and I noticed an immediate improvement when I installed the Xtream, but the shaker would be even better I think.

if you were going to use a hood mounted scoop, you could just get some thick weatherstripping or high density black foam and stick it on the top of the air cleaner so that it sealed against the hood when you closed it. then use a thin strip of aluminum the height of the air cleaner to wrap around it and block the airflow from coming in under the hood.

it would probably be better looking with the shaker scoop from an "under the hood" viewpoint - and definitely look cooler idling, but also is more expensive unless you can find something to work from a junk yard.

another thought, is to use a smaller hood mounted scoop but dont mount it on the hood. instead you could mount it to the custom airbox and make your own damn shaker

I thought that's what they were talking about.

palerider,
What is the source of your rubber part? It might work for my setup.
I tried the top filter before but with no luck. The car ran rough with it on, but smoothed out when I used the metal top.

yeah do share on where you picked up your rubber

now all you need is an air cleaner lid with a filter in it, and you'd be set.

Like I just said, the air cleaner lid messed up the airflow into my carb and caused rough running. YMMV

Post on parts used. I used the seal from 71-73 ram air and cut out and inch and reglued to fit. They are some cheaper alternatives - see attached link that got me started on the idea.

I have a shelby hood on my 65 with an oval air cleaner that draws from the side as well as the top. I was hoping to get cool air in at speed but it is not sealed. Haven't finished the alignment yet or interior so dont know how it will work.
