Default Is the engine built right?

Just picked up a 67' coupe (lots of new parts but still pretty rough) with a newly rebuilt 351w. Im gonna put the motor in my 69' fastback till I can build a stroker for it. I will have the motor out of the 67' tomorrow. Is there anything to look for or at to see if the engine was built correctly. The guy that we orginally got the car from said he built the engine his self so I would like to look for myself>

The best way to tell without taking it apart is to run it. But first, you can remove the valve covers and watch each rocker as you manually rotate the engine to check geometry. You can run a leakdown compression check. You can monitor the exhaust and look for leaks once you get it started. Is the carb tuned and ignition curve set? Your ability to get those perfect says a lot about the build.

That is one awesome car> Thanks for the advise on my engine. I got it pulled this morning and Im gonna clean it up and do some checking around on it tomorrow. Unfortunatly we are a little slow at the shop this week so Im talking a few days off to work on my car and let my guys take up my slack. Bitter sweet I guess, at lest I finally get some wrench time in.

I would check compression, look for leaks, pull valve covers and check valve geometry/lash. Do you know anything about what is inside the engine (i.e. bore size, stroke, cam, lifters, etc)?
