just buy a 347 rotating assy for an early block............that will give you 58 more cubic inches which means at least 50 more hp/tq in your 289 block, add some cam/heads/intake and you can ad over 100 hp/tq.

289 (4.00 bore 2.87 stroke)
302 (4.00 bore 3.00 stroke)

I can argue both sides of which is better. From a torque perspective, the 302 is going to be slightly better due to having more stroke. From a horsepower perspective, you can rev the 289 higher with the right parts because it has less piston speed limitation due to having a shorter stroke. All things equal, the 289s horsepower will be at a little higher rpm than the 302. Remember horsepower is a function of torque AND rpm. If the torque numbers are not too different, you can sometime compensate for lack of torque by reving higher.
