Ground up '67
Hey guys, whats up, i just joined, and have some questions, as you can guess I have a '67 Coupe that has been sitting for the past 8 years, while I have been "planning" to get around to restoring it. I am located in South Florida and am starting to look for a shop that can help me out with a restoration. I am not looking to keep the car all original and plan on doing a resto-mod. I would to know if you guys have any suggestion on shops both mechanical and/or body/paint. Like I said I'm in South Florida but would not be opposed to tossing the car on a trailer and taking it somewhere out of state. I appreciate any help you can give me thanks again.
Are you planning to had the car over to a shop and tell them to restore it? That is almost like handing someone a blank check. That will be very expensive and if it is out of state, how will you keep tabs on it? I would find someone local that has a good rep and start with dividing your restoration into phases. Let the guy do a phase and see how it comes out.
If you're just planning on having a shop do all the work I'd reconsider. You can go out a buy a nice coupe that has already been restored for a lot less than you can have one built. Plus you'd be able to drive it right now and not a year from now. IMO coupes are not worth having someone else do the work on.
haha mike +1 on that comment on selling it. made me have a good laugh.
yeah dont hand it over thats one of the joys of owning an old project car you get to say you know EVERYTHING about it cause you did the work. if you just want one you can drive now and restomod pick up someone elses project thats almost complete and alter it. dont start over. now if you want something to enjoy your weekends working on and tinkering with and making your own then stick it out through thick and thin and break your project down into stages. I.E fuel, body, interior, trans, engine ect.
nothing feels better then the first initail startup of that engine with your knuckle skin all over it or that first thumbs up after you get it on the road. dont let someone else make buld you there dream. its not worth it...

For some reason when it comes to classic, shops always see $$$ when you pull in the drive way. Its like their prices instantly go up 40%.
+1 on paying a little more compleat so you dont get taken to the cleaners in the long run.

Hey guys, a appreciate all the input....Im not planning on dropping off the car and comming back in year to pick up a finnished product. The car needs some body work, some rust taken care of and some new paint. I would live to do it all myself however at the moment i do not have the space or tools to perform paint and body work. Once the car has a a good shell, i plan on putting it together little by little on my own. I just wasnted to get the outside of the car the way i want it. Thanks again for all your replies sorry it took me a while to get back on here, i have been on vacation and just got back home 2 days ago.
Even so taking it to a shop to do just the paint and body work will likely run you 5K and up for a decent job. I see a lot of decent daily driver coupes selling for not much more than that. If you've got the money and don't mind spending it to build the car how you want it, at a cost more than what its worth, its up to you. I'm not saying its necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on what you're going for.
