Roughley 18 months ago I changed my tranny fluid/filter out. Im 99% sure I did everything right and now the gasket is leaking. The only thing I did different this last time was go with a rubber gasket instead of the cork. I have only driven about 3000 miles since the last change. What did I do wrong?

I plan on changing everything out once again, but to play it safe im going to buy a new pan along with the mounting bolts.

Any suggestions on what type of pan/gasket and filter to get this go around?

Whats the benefit of going with a deeper pan?

What type of fluid would you suggest and how much? (I do have a shift kit installed)

i've used shift kits and valve bodies from TCI and B&M, liked em both.

a deeper pan will let you hold more fluid which helps keep the fluid the trans is using cooler. You may also find a finned pan that helps shed away heat.

as far as fluid, i went with B&M synthetic trick shift - but any quality dextron mercon III or above should be good.

when i changed my filter i never got the pan to seal again. I even let it drain for 24 hours when i installed a shift kit. I had the surface spotless and it still leaks.

 

the secret is.....

use cork, and put a thin bead of weatherstripping adhesive on the pan side. place gasket on pan and let it tack up for a minute. then apply a thin layer of silicone to the other side (permatex ultra black kicks ***), and then install the pan onto the trans making sure the pan rail on the tranny is fluid free. using some carb or brake cleaner on a rag will ensure an oil-free surface.

once everything is buttoned up and the permatex and weatherstripping adhesive sets up, the pan is effectively glued to the transmission and will NOT leak.

this method works wonders for valve cover gaskets as well.
