Default Undercoating

Hello to all,

I'm in the process of restoring a 1973 convertible. I would like to eliminate as much internal road noise as possible. The car is on a rotisserie, so I am considering using bedliner material on the underside as well as the interior. Has anyone had success with this? Can anyone recommend a good material to use? Thanks in advance.

We used the spray on rubberized undercoating on mine after we replaced full length floor pans.

Working little by little on scraping / cleaning up and then doing the rest of the car on the parts the floor pans didn't get.

SEM brand bedliner will work for your needs iirc it was about 120$ for a gallon kit, im gonna say you will need at least 2. Unless you want to go with something 300x more expensive like rhino

Second Skin product called Spectrum Sludge is a water based undercoating. Which can be used on the under chassis and the inside floors. Their Damplifier Pro sound deadener mats go on the inside floor first then the Spectrum is applied over that. I've used 160sq/ft of the Damplifier Pro and it'll take 5 Gallons of the Spectrum Sludge to do the chassis, inside floors, inside fenders and wheel wells. Its not cheap.... but it does work.

Most of the Bedliner products are not sound or heat deadeners.

I would highly recommend going to Walmart or any auto parts store and picking up rubberized undercoating called Marhyde. It's like $3 a can at Walmart and a little bit more expensive at an auto parts supplier. 3M makes their own version of it but it costs more. It comes in a aerosol can and will coat over anything! I sprayed it in my wheel wells and really improved the look as well as the sound insulation. I also agree with adrenolin, pick up some Damplifier Pro sound matting by Second Skin and lay that down under your carpetting, it will make the biggest difference in both noise and heat insulation. I did my trunk as well and can't even hear my exhaust in 5th gear on the freeway. That stuff really works but is pretty costly.

Don't spray that Marhyde in the interior though, you won't get the smell out.

Walmart also sells Plasticote truck bedliner. I used two coats on the undercarriage of my 66 and it is the best I've used. Get the can and you can roll it or brush it on. Then use the one of the other products on the interior. It is rock hard, yet will not chip. Here's a pic:
