Default rally-pac dilemma

hi all,

I put in a rally-pac about a year ago as I have the 64 instument cluster (falcon style).
So with that I have a tach and clock (and it looks cool).
The rally-pac Tach (all those old ford factory tachs) are inline. They are hooked inline of the ignition wire (from ignition switch to coil).

So since I'm putting in the new engine I got with that a mallory distributor and mallory Hyfire iVc ignition box (with rev limiter).
My gutfeeling tells me that my rally pac tach will not work with this application.
Anyone any idea onb how to get that to work, or do you think I should just give it a try?

Or should I delete the Rally-Pac or should I keep my Rally Pac and sell the Mallory igniton parts (distributor, ignition box). I have a pertronix flamethrower II (with coil) that works with the rally pac that I could use instead ... ?

You can keep everything except maybe the Hyfire. If you can get a hold of a spare handheld tach, you can test it. If it works with the handheld, you should be OK. If not, Autometer sells a tach-adapt.

Any ta ch that pulls the info from coil- will do for this aftermarket setup, but the rally-pac is inline. It's a very specific (either genius or plain stupid) thing

Now I'm confused. I hooked my Autometer tach to the rally-pak wiring. I used the red-green wire as the input for the tach. I have a Summit rev-control box on mine though. Thought I could help. Sorry.

do you actually have that rally pac installed and is it showing correct rev, or are you just talking about that wiring?

it really is a very odd setup. the autotach will work like any other aftermarket tach. What ford did in the past seemed to have worked very well but is plain stupid as point of failure. if the tach dies the ignition dies with it.

I have decided though. I put in my pertronix II with coil and kepp my rally pac.
I'll keep the mallory stuff. maybe someday I'll get aftermarket cluster or find any other way to wiggle that (would have liked that rev limiter), but a sweet looking rally-pac is more important at the moment

I did have the Rally pak on it and the tach read properly. Of course, the clock didn't. I took it off when I started redoing the inside of the car but YES, it did work before I took it off.

Kalli, keep the cool rally pac! There are two types of tach triggers - current triggered (series) and voltage triggered (parallel). Yours is the current triggered variety. I'm not that familiar with your ignition box, but if it has a tach terminal and doesn't work, try one of these tach adapters:

Aftermarket White Wire Magnetic Trigger
Tachometer Trigger Connector

Ford (Before 1976) 29074 29078
Ford (After 1976) 29074 29078

In your case, the 29078 is the right one, but of course it is also the more expensive one!

Thanks a million Mark. Good to hear there might be an option.
I'll install my pertronix for now and do a bit of research on it. I can always add the mallory later. Good thing is that with the old setup I don't have to do any mounting, wiring etc. Will have ignition done in 20 mins (just swap distributor and mount coil. And i know that system very well. so if the engine doesn't start I don't have to read manuals for an hour if I have it wired correctly :-)
always a good idea to start with something known-good.

this seems to be the job alright.

Thanks a million. I didn't lknow something like that would exist
