Installing headers
well, I cant weld, and I dont want to blow the money on a welder.
Without including the cost of the headers, how much would a reputable auto mechanic usually charge to instal headers?
Also...
anyone try these shorty headers?:

If not, do you recommend the long tube tri-y's you can get easily from CJ for about $130?

Why would you need a welder to install headers? They are bolt on. And, as far as shorties, I recommend you look into getting some JBA's. Tri-Y's are used by a lot of Mustangers, but some report they drag when going over speed bumps. http://www.desertrat.com/jba/jba.htm
I was told that I needed to weld the collectors on. (in THIS thread)
It looks as though Y's would require the cutting of the pipe and adding a new flange.
Shorties have collectors that go down a bit further than the flange on the original manifolds. Will this require new pipes? or can I just bolt the shorties directly onto the flange that attaches the pipes to the manifold?

The JBA's will hook right up.....no welding required. Although expensive, the ceramic coated ones will save you some engine compartment heat. Do a google search for installing headers. Although the new headers will come with gaskets, many of the big boys insist on ROL gaskets. http://www.rolmfg.com/
I got a quote from an exhaust shop to bend me a dual exhaust setup for around $300, going from headers to tailpipe, including two dynomax mufflers. If you're going through the trouble and expense of putting the headers on, why not freshen up the whole exhaust? Also, if you look at the pic of the exhaust manifolds (straight out the back flange) to the shorties (coming out at an angle), there will obviously be some cutting involved. Why deal with the leaks and hassle of bolting everything together when you can get it done and never have to deal with it again?
I have to agree with everyone on the Tri-Y's as far as them dragging... kind of sad though because I hear they make some pretty good power.

Oops! My bad.......Yeah, you need to take the car to a muffler shop after you get the headers on. That is, unless you can bend pipes and weld. Try to find a shop near, because those open headers are going to be LOUD. Or, have the car towed.
Never had a problem with tri-ys dragging. They're designed specifically for our cars.
One thing worth knowing: shorties will give you no power gains. They might sound better; but provide no better breathing than the factory logs. Ol' Shel knew it 40 years ago: Tri-ys are the way to go.

I did my 65 coupe and my 65 Fastback with Heddman ceramic coated headers and the Flowmaster EXHAUST SYSTEM #FLO-17273.
The nice thing about the headers is they are now using a ball and sockett connection instead of the flange gasket that leaks all the time.
With the Flow master kit you have to grind the weld off the cross over pipe to get to connect to the headers and then reweld it very easy to do
and it sounds great!!!
