do you think i should put the victor intake and pan gaskets and see if they leak, or go straight to another brand?

if the intake gasket leaks, is there a chance of hyrdolocking?
If money is no object, go pick up some of those print-o-seal intake gaskets at your local chain store. Otherwise you can slap on the Victor gaskets and see what happens. They'll probably work fine. And if they do leak, the chances of hydrolocking the engine are pretty low. Usually if it leaks at the water passages, it'll leak into the oil.

Either way, get a one-piece oil pan gasket. Not so much to stop leaks, but to make life all around easier, now and in the future. Don't use any silicone with it.

i got the master kit from Northern Auto Parts
All name brand stuff, seemingly good quality, shipped overnight for just ground service. And it was just under 350 for everything including pistons.

EK045 @ northernautoparts.com

also a cam upgrade is just $4
