160tooth flywheel ...
Hi all,
maybe someone has an idea.
When I pulled my 289 I ordered a flywheel and clutch (10" dia) and 157tooth for the 302. I counted te teeth on old flywheel to 160. Thought I had it wrong and just ordered te 157tooth. The teeth were a bit gammy on the old one, but never gave problems.
So now I bolted it all up and it's perfectly fine. At the same time I ordered same clutch for friend (diaphragm, 10" McLeod) with a 1968 Mustang.
They pulled it apart just to find out it's 11" inch in there and they couldn't bolt the 10" clutch. I checked on engine and it's a 71 302 in his 68. we alwyas thatought it was a 289... His clutch was long style (not diaphragm). that migt be the reason onm why he couln't bolt the pressure plate.
So I said he can have my old flywheel no problem. So buddy of mine counted and had three other fellas counting. all5 agree: 160 tooth.
How is this possible?
We're not sure on what to order now. I thought if I give him my flywheel he just needs to get a different starter. Now I not really sure on what to get at all ?!
will I need to count the teeth on his old flywheel to see if his old starter bolts up?
Is there a way to determine the difference between the starters (tooth count)?
Will I need to buy a ring gear? will that even fit ?

bellhousing is 6-bolt, so it's not original. But the car was 170ci 6cylinder. maybe they took the flywheel from original engine when they upgraded to the 289 V8.
makes sense. Anyway, since he has a bellhousing that was running with 164flywheel I guess he'll have to have that so that the starter can engage. My flywheel will be no good for him so.
Thanks for info with 160tooth. makes sense now.
