Default Backing plate gasket?

I'm working on restoring the brake backing plates on my 10" drums. ('67 convertible) I have one almost ready to go back on, but several diagrams I have looked at show some sort of a gasket between the backing plate and the smaller plate the bolts go through to hold it on the spindle. One picture on an old thread here looked lile maybe red RTV in between. Do I need this? There wasn not one in place when I took it apart.

bump...
I just dont want to put it back together without something that should be there. I can't see what purpose it would serve though.
plcdude posted a nice pic in another thread.

vibration resistance and dust sealing. You should have something there. Glazier's and NPD can get them (I just sourced them for a customer), or you can cut your own out of gasket material. Or you can hit the Easy Button and use RTV.

When I took my backing plates off there was a thin paper gasket between the backing plate and the rear end bearing housing. Yes that is red RTV you see in the picture. I figured if a paper gasket worked in '67 a little RTV should work just fine in '08.

Awesome. Thanks guys. RTV it is. Now for one more coat of gloss black, and on to the next one! My brake lines just came in (remember that slow boat from China?) So I'm pumped to put it all together. Too bad I'm going out of town this weekend.
