Default Edelbrock questions

I know own my first Edelbrock carb, not by choice. It was on the latest car I bought, 66 fastback. I have worked on some quadra jets about 20 years ago but that is my only eperience with this type of carb. It is a 1405 wich I have found out is a 600cfm. My question is this, at idle in gear I'm sure it is running too rich due to the cam that is in the engine. I don't know what cam is in there but it is very loppy at idle. I have made some adjustments, set the idle up and turned down the idle mixture. The vacuum gage in the car will be at 8 inches when I first pull up to a stop. If I sit there 2 seconds it will drop to 2 inches so I'm sure the rods are up and dumping fuel. It does have rods like a quadra jet right? If it was a Holley I know that I would need to change the power valve but it is a edelbrock so I'm a bit lost. Is there an adjustment that can be made to keep the rods down? Am I on the right track or just pissing up a tree. I'm thinking I need to trade it for a Holley so I know how to work on it. Any suggestions would help, if you know Edelbrocks.

Yu need the calibration kit and it comes with an assortment of springs to tune the metering rods:

The Edelbrock™ is the reincarnation of the Carter AFB. Sounds like a minor amount of maintenance will give you a perfectly reliable setup, much more so than a leak-prone Holley.

I guess I will try it but I am a Holley guy. It would not hurt for me to learn some about these Edelbrock's though, I guess.

It is just weird, even the gas inlet is on the back of the carb. Kinda funky.

Even if the rods were up, it shouldn't matter. The carb won't be moving enough air to pull gas from it.Kinda like having 100 jetting in the front at idle. Doesn't matter. At that point, your not using the jets. Know what I mean ? Check your idle circuit for debris.

Or the idle speed setting is too high, and too much of the transfer slot is uncovered. What's the timing at idle? If it's got a big cam, it needs a bunch of idle timing to get the idle speed up, you don't wanna do it with just the curb idle speed screw.

It sounds like you have a big cam which @ idle will kill your manifold vacuum which will pull in the power valve circuit which makes things worse unless you have the proper setup in the carb. I had the same problem with my 68 Formula 400 firebird with a big cam running a Carter AFB.

That is what I'm confused about, the power valve circuit. I thought the rods took care of that, is that true? Is there a power valve like in a Holley? I'm sure the power valve circuit is on because of low vacuum I'm just not sure how it works or how to fix it.

Here are some good links to have as a reference:

Owners Manual: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...405_manual.pdf

Installation Instructions:
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_.../1000/1405.pdf

The owners manual will go into the metering rods, springs, etc., and some good diagrams of how they are changed.

I have had my challenges with my Edelbrock 1407 carb, which sits atop a strocked 408W, with the Edelbrock Performer RPM top end package. (cam, intake, heads, etc.) I'm sure it's not where I want it yet, but when time permits, I'll tinker with it more.

Hope this info helps you!
