Default 9 inch question

Hey yall got a quick question about a 9 inch rear im lookin at pickin up, the guy said it measures 54 1/2 inches which is the same width, or within 1/4" (which i think is just him measureing wrong) of the 68s width, the only reason im hesitant about buying it is because he said its coming out of a 64 f100, will this axle work for my 68 stang? can anyone confirm that this axle is the right width and the right bolt pattern...?

just talked to the guy, aparent the bolt pattern is the bigger one, i have an 8 inch that i was going to run for now but could i just use the axles out of the 8 inch in this truck 9 inch? what are the differences between a car 9 inch and this truck 9 inch if there are any? he did again said it measured 54 1/2" backing plate to backing plate, thats only 1/4" total difference though it should be ok, for $150 i think this rear end may be worth it what yall think

I think if you go messure it yourself you will find that the width is not even close. On most trucks the axle mounts under the spring so the spring perches will be in the wrong place. I think you are wasting your time. There are a ton of rears that will just bolt in for your car. Anything from 67 to 70, Mustang or Cougar will bolt right up. I would keep looking.

welding on new spring perches isnt an issue, ill go measure it myself though, for $150 i think its a deal though considering most other 9 inches go for much more, i may just run the 8 inch for now untll i find one not sure though

There is a link to a really good 9 inch site in the FAQ. I would recommend reading it before you go look. Might save you some head aches.

A truck is a lot wider then a car and the spring perches are on the wrong side and wrong bolt pattern.Take a look at http://midnightdsigns.com/james/faq1.txt there is a lot of rear end info in there.

as it has already been said, its to wide, spring perches on the wrong side and the wrong distance, and the wrong bolt pattern. I cut one down out of a 68 though and am using my stock axles in it, i had to get conversion bearings though.

Why do all that work when you could buy a housing and have it done already.

not sure if you are asking that question to me or not, if you are it is because i bought a 9" traction loc rear for $100 out of a 68 F-100. I have access to all the equipment to do it, i even made my own jig. I did it because i could, it was a lot of fun and i would do it again. I will have a completely rebuilt and powder coated rear end with disc brakes for around $700 and i did everything myself. Once i get it installed i can sell the 8" and the overall upgrade will cost even less. The whole thing will end up costing the same as upgrading my 8" to traction loc.
