Default Gas venting from fuel pump

Hey folks,

My 67 is blowing a lot of gas out of the vent in the fuel pump. Car has just been put back on the road but was not doing this with first 50mi. Mechanic "adjusted" carb for slight hesitation recently. Fuel pump was fairly new before car was parked. Car runs normal.

I'm thinking I have a carb problem not a fuel pump problem. Any advice where to start looking.

Thanks,

You mean your carb is blowing gas out the vent tube ? That's either a needle and seat problem or a fuel pump with PSI too high.

cpr,

thanks for the reply, the gas is coming out of a small vent in the top of the fuel pump. The manual says something about this preventing the fuel pump from building up too much pressure at the carb.

I would think it has a hole in the diaphragm of the fuel pump. I shouldn’t leak fuel.

if it really is coming out of the fuel pump, it sounds like you need a new fuel pump or to rebuild. i've never seen or heard of a fuel system that was designed to leak fuel.

what kind of fuel pump? if mechanical, the diaphragm probably became brittle while the car was parked. after enough time it developed a split and is now leaking.

Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and direct it into a safe container. Disconnect your coil so the car won't start. Crank the engine so the fuel pump pumps fuel into the container and watch the pump for leaks. I think you need a new pump.

If the pump itself LEAKS ANYWHERE,,,, EVER, it is late for the trash can....

The pump is trash.

Thanks for the advice, I can't help you with the personal problem of leaking fuel or gas. But I will be replacing my fuel pump.

Thanks,
