Default clutch/gear question

i just bought a 65 coupe. i have no idea on how to fix/diagnose problems. any help would be really appreciated.......i have a 3 speed. i was giving it a little gas while in 1st gear then all of a sudden it would not go into any gear. so i had to pull over. the car still ran but would not go into any gear as the clutch pedal seemed to be useless. so i turned off the engine then i was a able to put into gear and start the car in 2nd gear and drive home(wasnt very far.) as i got closer to home all of a sudden the clutch started to work and i was able to change gears once again. although going into 1st seemed to make the car vibrate more than usual. but 2nd and 3rd gear seemed to be fine...i hope someone can help me as i am the furthest thing from a mechanic and am trying to learn in a hurry.thanks in advance

Sounds like a linkage problem. Do you have the Factory Service Manual?

if you look along the side of your transmission you should see/trace the linkage conections to their respective parts. if they are excesivly loose, that might be part of it. somtimes mine wont go into first very well, when it happens i have to take my foot off the clutch, in neutral, let the gears spin (i guess to mesh/synchro) then push it in smooth.
