problem with new distributor
so i ordered one of the MDS ready to run kits that comes with the a pro billet distributor, blaster 2 coil, and wires. spent all day putting it together for it all not to work.
i made sure the coil in the distributor was lined up in the same spot over the same plug. but is it possible that when i put the new distributor in i could have changed the position of the revolution when i turned the oil pump slightly to get the distributor shaft all the way down?
as of right now, if i hold the gas when i start it the car like sputters and then starts until i let off the gas.
any ideas?

when installing the dizzy the tooth on the dizzy gear may have rotated when installing and is now one tooth off of the drive gear.
Further more attempting to set timing without a light will yield less than optimal results but you should get it to run a bit better than that.
Try removing the dizzy again and making sure the rotor is dead center on 1 once the dizzy is fully seated.
Further more make sure piston 1 is TDC...

Remove #1 spark plug, put your thumb over the hole, and rotate the engine by hand until you feel air escaping. Continue rotating the engine until the balancer is at zero. On a carb car, you can not be off a tooth. Simply turn the distributor until the rotor is just past the #1 wire position on the cap. Start the car and set the base timing.
you say the car is actually starting and stalls when you let off the gas. have someone start the car while you turn the duistributor clockwise and anticlockwise to get it into the ballpark. but in the end you will have to use a timing light to get it right
option a) timing light with advance so you set th etiming light to the degrees you want and adjust for TDC against the pointer
option b) buy a timing strip that you can tape to the balancer. For this you need to know the diamater of the balancer. they're only a few follar fifty

option C) Check the damper wheel (the thing bolted to the crank shaft) for timing marks. try taking light sandpaper like wet/dry 800 grit and using wet to gently remove any grime or rust that maybe covering the timing marks on the outside edge (or even perhaps the face) of the damper wheel.
They should be there check carefully paint can be used to highlight the numbers after you find them....
Note: timing marks are not found on the belt in this application.
