Default AOD swap question...

So I got the new motor and the AOD sitting in the car lastnight and everything seems to be bolting up nicely. But today, with little surprise, when I attempted to use the c4 shift linkage the bends were way off. Ive spent the past hour heating and bending trying to make it fit with little luck. I was just curious if they make a special shift linkage for the swap or do I need to keep modifying this one?

Thanks, Cody

I think I remember seeing an aod shift linkage on mustangs+ but it was like $130. For that price I'd just get an aftermarket shifter with a cable.

im got a B&M star shifter and it looks great in a mustang. it comes with the shifter cable so it would get rid of all that linkage for you

I'll be doing this swap in due time, but all I can really help with at the moment is the difference between floor and column shift trannies. If your aod came out of a column shift car, the shift shaft will have to be removed and flipped over. I suppose you can compare the shift shaft to your C4. If it's opposite, you'll have to swap it. That can be a real problem provided you missed it.

I bought an AOD swap kit which gave me a new shaft. So everythings good there.

An aftermarket shifter would be an easy way out but I want the car to appear all original. For 130 bucks I think ill mess around with the old c4 linkage a little bit more

Thanks guys for the help!

I made my own out a piece of 1' long all thread, a turnbuckle, eyebolts, and some nylon/brass bushings. I can get a picture of it up tomorrow if you'd like. It shifts crisp and solid and can be adjusted and locked with the turbuckle. Cost me $16 and about 1 hr to make. super easy and it'll never stretch like a cable one can.

The previous owner of my '67 convertible installed a Shelby console with the original shifter sitting on top of the console. He also made his own out of all-thread. I wasn't very excited when I first saw it, but it works just fine.

This guy sells a "AOD bracket & shift lever kit" for $58. He also sells a complete conversion kit for $559.

Thats the kit that I got for mine. Its great and gives you almost everything you need but it doesnt mention anything about shift linkages. But I think I can make the original c4 one work with a little bit more bending.

Ok I just did this, If the AOD has a shift lever facing up it will only need a rod, if it faces down use the new lever that come with the rod kit, I got one from Mustang Plus, woking good but need ajusted, along with the TV cable.

So I got the c4 linkage to work finally but now I have ran into another problem. I went to put the drivers side header on and the collector hits the pan on the tranny. The headers were on the car when my dad bought it 15 years ago so I have no clue as to what brand they are. Do they make a long tube header that will clear the AOD? Or what did you guys do for exhaust?

Thanks again, Cody
