Boss 351 mods...
having my Boss restored and wanting to make it a daily driver... I need you guys help on something:
1) want to convert to 4-wheel discs, and 4-piston calipers up front. So, was considering brakes from a wrecked mustang cobra or 2007+ shelby... what do y'all think???
2) manifolds or headers???
3) billet 17" magnum 500's or what wheel/tire combo???
4) stock ignition, MSD, pertronix, or duraspark???

You may want to concider selling the Boss 351 and buying a more common Mach1
or Sportroof to modify. The Boss is a real rare car and you may even pay for the mods
on the other car with the proceeds of the Boss.
That said, I'm more in favor of enjoying the car too and may be doing similar mods in the future on my 71 Mach1. I like keeping the stock look though.
There are impressive disk brake upgrade kits to fit vintage Mustangs, check with the online Mustang shops. It may be alot easier (and safer) than trying to adapt later model parts.
Headers for a 351C with 4 speed, you may have to go with shorty headers rather than long tube to clear the clutch linkage, that's what I've heard anyway.
Currently I run the Pertronix points eliminator with the stock iginition. You may have problems with the stock tach if you go with aftermarket iginition.
The side strips were an option on the Mach1. They may have been an option on the Boss? not sure. I've only seen Bosses with the stripes.

I would think a true Boss car would sell for enough to buy something else, do your upgrades and still have cash left over from the sale.
The everyday Mustangs I can see modding to the hilt as we're doing ourselves but the rare ones should be sold to those who will restore them properly. Once you start modding one it'll never be original again.
You can get Wilwood front disks with 4-piston calipers that start at about 800.00 and will fit any 16" wheel and up.
Shorty or mid-length headers are what you'll be looking for. Much easier to install/fit then the long-tubes.
Specialty Wheels Ltd makes a nice Magnum wheel in various sizes. I've got 16x8s with 245/50s mounted and they look great. Thats about 10" of rubber on the road. Not sure what tires for the 17s though.
I've heard nothing but troubles with duraspark setups. I have one and decided to go with a full MSD distributor and box. My father runs a Pertronics in his 72 AMC with no issues as do a number of other people I know. Budget go with the Pertronics but if you have the cash go with the MSD setup.
I'd leave the stripe on but its your car...
Drive and enjoy it daily! Pretty sure our generation doesn't have to worry about fuel but its a good excuse to use

Change whatever you like, but on a real BOSS don't change anything that can't be unbolted and put back to original.

i went with SSBC 13 inch up front and 10.5 inch in the rear(pics are below)
2) manifolds or headers???
go with headers but make sure to save your manifolds and hpipe midpip muffler and tails etc
3) billet 17" magnum 500's or what wheel/tire combo???
you can run some 2003-2004 mach 1 17 inch wheels with a spacer(also can be seen in my pics)
4) stock ignition, MSD, pertronix, or duraspark???
id go with msd or petronix

Yeah stick to stuff you can bolt on would be best. Both willwood and baer make some killer brakes for it.If it was my car http://www.mustangsteve.com/cobrabrakes.html the cobra brakes are more then enough and cheap to use.
thanks, guyz. I am going to keep the car as stock as possible, using ONLY stuff I can bolt on, but the car will never be sold, so I don't have to worry bout that.
As for the brakes, I will be driving this car to work sometimes, and I want to be able to deal with interstate traffic well and the brakes that are on the car are mushy by today's standard. Besides, I am not a drum disc brake fan, even if they are only on the back. The drums will be kept, though, and put in a box in storage.
I guess I will be going with the Pertronix... I am still undecided about the headers, as the neighbors may, or may not like that, at 6:30 in the morning.

There's nothing wrong at all with drums in the rear on a street car. I can understand bigger front brakes, but rear drums are overkill unless you're driving the car on the track. Car mfg's realized this a couple years ago when they got back into putting drum brakes on the rears of most cars. They tried the rear disc thing for a while to reduce weight, but it ended up costing far more than it's worth.
If your brakes are mushy, it's because something's wrong, not because the design is inadequate. My factory style disc/drum system works fantastic, even at freeway speeds. The limiting factor is traction, not braking power.
