Default Starting Problems

Hi guys, i need some help getting my baby to start. 69 with a 351W. I'm turning the key and nothing. No crank, just silence. Battery is not dead, lights are working. No idea what I did. Any ideas?

Try shorting across the solenoid and see if that won't kick your starter over. Just take a pair of pliers, and using the handles, touch the two big nuts on the solenoid. If it kicks the starter, then replace the solenoid. If that doesn't do the trick, then take both the positive and negative cables off your battery at both ends and clean the cable contact points and the contact points on the engine and solenoid. If that doesn't do the trick, then it is time to get out the old trusty multi-meter and do some testing for 12 Volts between the solenoid and starter switch. If you have 12 volts there, then drink a 6 pack while the Ford house sends out a wrecker to have them fix it.

It might be a problem with the shifting handle also.. it might dont get a the minus and there is no connection... try to hold the shift handle while trying to start the car.. ( if its an automatic shiffter...)

Good Day.

That is also a strong possibility IF you have an automatic. If you do, then turn the key on to the strart position, and jiggle the shifter while it is in park.

ya, that's been a problem before with the shifter, it is an auto. I tried to push it up a little but nothing special. I'll wiggle it a little and see what happens.

ugh, still nothing happening. When I used the pliers on the solenoid, it sparked a little. Good or bad? If good, then could it be in the ignition coil? If still not the problem, i'm taking it to a pro to do some body work and I'm having him check the wiring so hopefully he'll fix it. And yes, I messed around with the shifter and it still didn't work.

I had the same problem last week... I ended up replacing the ignition switch and all locks because I never got the keys from the guy I bought my baby from. I was able to find a full wiring diagram and got her to start cranking, still no spark though. Checking the wiring behind the dash will not prove easy, but it may help you to look over the 2 page diagram on this site and scan the entire circuitry from the ignition switch out. Hopefully you won't run into what I did with melted wires and such, if you do, definately replace or tape any bare wire that could cause a short.
