Default C4 automatic shifters

I was looking on Mustangs unlimited and found this

http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy0...atKey=EMUSTANG

when it says shift through gears, does it mean first second third fourth and fifth or does it just mean park reverse neutral and drive...

Also, i was told that if i start the car in 1 (low) I can shift to second, then drive, then back to 2 to shift it like a manual, but i didn't think that was true, nor did i think my orig transmission was in any shape to handle the roughness...

any input on my 2 ?s would be greatly appreciated.

Being that the C4 is a 3-speed automatic, I'm pretty sure that shifter won't let you shift it into 4th or 5th gear

The shifter will let you manually shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gear and down to 2nd, etc. If your transmission is not in great shape, you should fix it first before putting that shifter on it.

I have this shifter and love it, there's nothing better for an auto than ratchet shifting. If you're looking for an aftermarket shifter I recommend this one.

but how do i shift it, start in 1, then push it foward? I want to pull it back lol!!

Also, can I do this with my stock shifter...

And another question, If im driving and someone wants to say...race....can i drop it to second or will that over rev the engine, say if i was already going about 50mph then dropped to 2nd.

Then leave your stock shifter in and make sure it and the kickdown are adjusted properly. It will downshift when you step on the accelerator and shift as normal when cruising.

Sounds logical . . . you might have to try it and see.

I want to pull it back lol!!
For that, you want a reverse pattern valve body rather than a shifter. And maybe a re-labelled shift pattern display, since this is not the normal arrangement (people do tend to forget things like this when switching between cars that don't all work in quite the same way).

Also, can I do this with my stock shifter...
Yes, but probably with a whole lot less accuracy/reliability/repeatability than you would have with a good ratcheting shifter. It's surprisingly easy to overshift one or two 'positions' when you're in hurry-up-and-grab-the-next-gear mode. Even though you can't hurry the hydraulics up much (which is what actually accomplishes the shifting in an automatic), people still try to bang through the gears like they're pulling the handle on a manual tranny when they're manually shifting the automatic.
Skipping over 2 and hitting D by mistake means you might as well have left it in D.
Hitting N for any reason = lose.

And another question, If im driving and someone wants to say...race....can i drop it to second or will that over rev the engine, say if i was already going about 50mph then dropped to 2nd.
At 50, a 3 to 2 downshift isn't going to hurt anything that's not weak to begin with, although doing this manually might momentarily lock the rear tires and will beat up on the U-joints a little. If you manage to skip past 2 and hit 1 instead (see above), then depending on your axle ratio, tire size, and safe engine rev limit you might then find yourself in for some engine repair work.
