Default Quarter Panel

I took my 64.5 Mustang to the auto shop today to get some metal work done, and he said that I needed the full quarter panel and not just the sking. I am looking on NPDlink.com (National Parts Deopt) and they do not have anything that I can see that is a "full" panel. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. maybe I am just confused. What else is there besides the skin? am I just stupid? please help

You're looking for a "quarter panel" which is about as complete as you can get. No tricks here, just a little poor wording. Most include the trunk seal area and half of a brake light section (for 65 as a reference), but don't include the door striker area as it wraps around this part by about 1/2". The "quarter repair panel" is just the skin which usually includes no part of the tail lamp section.

27846-2a or 27847-2a will likely be what you need for a coupe. Adjust these numbers as needed for a convert or fastback.

I bought mine from Mustangs Unlimited (likely came from the same hole in the ground) and the first one I did sucked. I only wish the second one just sucked. It was worse...

Could he be talking about the wheel housing as well? If you have rust damage which has eaten away the outer wheel flare on the quarter, then he may be indicating the wheel housing inside needs to be replaced as well. The wheel housing and quarter join up in the wheel flare to form basically a double thickness.

A "skin" is just the outer surface, without proper edges. A quarter panel has proper edges and seams, like the factory piece. Best is an NOS panel, but if you can't find one, A Dynacorn panel from someplace like Glazier Nolan would be a good choice.

You may want to get a few parts magazines ordered. A lot of the free magazines for sites like NPD, mustangs unlimited, and cj pony parts have the pictures of the parts that you are looking for, and they make a great read while on the pot.. Just a suggestion if you dont already have them.. And they are easier to search through than most of the web sites..
