Classic Mustang purchase help.
Hi Guys,
New member from CA, i am about to buy my first classic Mustang, i am looking at a -66 coupe and i am having somewhat of a remorse even i have not gotten the car yet. I have a verbal agreement to pick it up tomorrow and am very uncertain on the sale price.
Long story short, its a 66 2 door coupe, original v8 car, no pwr brakes or steering. 302 with 3 speed, it was painted about 8 years ago and the paint job isnt that great, chips here and there, some rust areas around fenders etc, its a CA car so overall pretty good shape. Drives and runs good.
Its not an original car and thats not what i am looking for either, i am more of a hotrod person and the car falls right in that category, now to the question that is so hard to answer, i dont want to pay too much for this thing, we have an agreement around $ 4k. Can you give me some input? it would be greatly appriciated!

4k doesn't sound that terrible as long as the rust isn't that bad and its in good running shape. If you posted pictures people here would be able to give a much better estimation.
The big question, how is the cowl? Is the rusted through or not. Pour some water through it and see if it comes through the sides of the fenders where it should or on to the passenger side floor board.

Dont know on the cowl, however the owner mentioned it got wet inside if it was raining hard. It has some spots but not bad, floor looks good and so does the trunk. I will post what i have for pictures.

yea check the cowl good i am in the process or drilling out almost 200 spot welds to fix mine. i checked when i bought but they had put a cowl patch in and i didnt catch it till i was tearing the car apart. I still would have bought though. my car i got had all power and air. the car was complete just not all together. I payed less than 3k and it had a new motor and aod transmission. Hope this helps
Sounds like the car has possible rust issues. I would more than likely ask for less, maybe around 3k. With the down economy you can find solid cars for cheaper than usual right now. Paying that extra grand up front is worth it considering how handy you are with a welder and how much free time you have.
Plus that 3.73 rear with just a 3 speed is rather steep, get you off the line in a hurry but you will be spinning high rpms and highway speed.

That one doesn't look too bad. No rust can go really far with these cars.
