Default wiring problem

I just installed my new engine. Set up the harness the same way i did last time. I have a 1 wire alternator, HEI distributor that has a constant 12v source running to it for the factory harness (the solid red wire i believe that hooked to the coil, I kept the same starter and hooked it up to the siloniod as well as a 10 gauge wire to ground the starter. I also put a 10g wire from the engine to the firewall to ground the engine. My problem is that the car is live(hot) always now even when the key isnt in. The car ran fine before i swaped motors and all harness are brand new. I try to hook the bat up and it just keeps sparking at the post? Can anyone help me with this. I want to hear my new motor!!! What did i do wrong?

ok fixed that on my own. had siloniod crossed. But now im trying to start and it will turn over but im not getting fuel. I have a new holley mechanical pump. Does it take alittle while to get the pump to pump the gas from the tank after having it sit for awhile?

when i start my car after it have sat for a while is put gas in the carb and start it and it usually pulls it up pretty quick instead of draining the battery down trying to get gas up there...

i pulled the braided fuel line of the hard line going to the tank to check the suction. I had someone crank the motor over while i stuck my thumb on the line from the pump and nothing. Didnt feel any suction? what yall think

Are you sure the lines are connected properly at the pump? The lines could be reversed. Also, Is the pump correct for the motor? The eccentric may not be contacting the pump arm. The same thing happened to me. I had to get a pump with a differnt shaped arm. The new pump worked perfectly.

In means from the tank, out means to the carb. Check your lines.

Of course, now that I say that. Did you install a fuel pump eccentric on the end of the cam?

found my problem. Guy who i bought the motor from built the motor for a electric fuel pump, not mechanical. didnt tell me this when i got it but oh well. Now im going to have to get a good electric fuel pump for it because im not going to disassemble the hole front of the motor again. This would be my 3rd time to do so. Does anyone know a good electric fuel pump to buy and from a site to get it at. I need it here by tuesday.

Hmmm… You're gonna modify the whole fuel system because you don't wanna spend a couple hours R&R the timing cover? I know it's disappointing, but jeeze, that'll cost more and take longer than putting in a pump cam.

All I have to do is put a pump in the back by the tank and hook up 2 wires and run the braided line. It's going to cost me around $200 dollars and a hell of alot less time. I figured it was alot better option then the mechanical pump and work better with my set up. I'm still keeping the carb so I'm not converting to EFI. Is the holley red electric fuel pump a good option?
