Need help with 289 build
Hey everyone. My names Charlie, I'm 18 and I've got a 289 block to build but I really don't know where to start or what parts to get. I've been workin on cars for 4 years now and I've got a decent bit of knowledge for my age and experience. My plan is to bore and stroke the engine to somewhere around 347ci and do other mods to make it more of a performance engine and custom fab it into my 3000gt(I know it's not a mustang but the engine is so I figured this place would be best)
Basically I have a bare block an I need everything for it.
Any help is great.
Thank you
Charlie

I seriously doubt you're going to be able to fit that motor in a 3000GT. The V6 it has is already crammed in there pretty good, and the V8 will be taller and need to be mounted inline rather than transverse, which will make even more problems trying to fit it under the hood.
Why not build up the current motor? It's not like there's any lack of performance parts for Nissan 3.0's.

First off it's a Mitsubishi 3 liter and no there isn't a lack of parts but they are all extremly expensive. And the engines are prone to a lot of problems.
And actually a small block v8 fits pretty well and there is already a tunnel for the driveshaft. People put 440ci engines in these cars with some modification

Sorry, mitsubushi. Dyslexic moment.
I still have my doubts, but if that's what you want to do and you have the $ to do it (don't try to convince yourself it's going to be cheaper than building the 3.0), go for it.
Pick up a copy of Tom Monroe's book, "Building Small Block Fords." Great book.

sounds like a cool project. I dont think a small block will actually have any trouble at all getting snugged down in there. The 3.0 is an overhead cam motor if my memory serves me well and in and of itself is bulkier and taller than most pushrod motors.
Theres a couple really cool swaps a shop near me did. One was a 351w into a ford focus and the other was a V6 out of the last gen Ford Taurus SHO into a 95 prelude shell. I say you go for it.

Thanks for the advice.
And yes your right the 3.0 is a dual over head cam and it's wider and taller than the 5.7 liter I have in my gmc 2500 so I'm confident the 289 will fit right in with room to spare. As I build it I'll make sure to have pictures to show. I just got done painting the car so now it's onto this project

Okay my reasons for bot keeping the 3 liter.
1. It blows timing belts if you don't change them at or before 60k
2. Lifters go bad constantly
3. Very expensive for parts and labor is difficult
4. The only two trans. For the engine are horrible and go bad easily
5. FWD, can't stand it
there's probably more but those are the big ones

If you wanna build it up yourself you could buy a 347 kit from Woody at Fordstrokers.com, or buy a short or a long block. If you want a nasty 347, then a stroker kit with light internals, and I'd recommend Mahle pistons, then a set of TEA ported heads like TFS TW's or High Ports(there are a LOT of good heads for a 347) and then a custom cam from someplace like FTI or Jay Allen. Then all the supporting crap. Should put you in the 450-500hp range at the crank in a nice little street package.
now the problems that i forsee you having now that i think about it:
I think due to emissions you're going to have a nightmare getting your car on the road legally. In CT anyway, you cant register a car that has a motor older than the car itself unless its a classic. Meaning, I couldnt take a 302, put it in my 03 GT with the 4.6 modular engine, and register it.
You'll probably need some sort of stand-alone computer system for anything electronic on your car. Probably need to convert all your gauges to mechanical vs electric...unless you do some sorta EFI swap instead of a carb. speaking of, which do you intend to do? EFI or carb?
