Default Another seatbelt question...

I have a 68 daily driver that had the front seatbelts removed. I need to replace them but cant afford a nice set yet, just looking for a temp replacement.

Can I buy just standard 3 pt retractable seatbelts or do I have to have a certain kind to fit a mustang?

Here's a link to the ones I found on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-Bla...4506.m20.l1116

They aren't that attractive but if they fit for the moment then I'd rather have these than get a ticket, got too many of those already! haha

Thanks!

If it were mine I would look for a good used set even if they are not that pretty. The universal seat belts will never go on my car. They will not fit properly and will most likely require brackets etc to be fabricated. Just keep you eye open for a used set that is either the correct color or black and it will look and fit much better.

I don't think you'll get stopped for not wearing a seat belt. My 65 has lap belts only and I never get an officer thinking I'm not wearing a belt. The shoulder belt came out mid year 68 I think. Just tell them it was a lap belt only car. Does it have any belts at all?

You can get a decent used set for less than those universal Ebay ones.

It's sometimes difficult to find a reputable shop that will fabricate a seat/shoulderbelt anchor. The liability is too high and not worth it.

Shoulder belts were optional in 68 and 69, so you don't have to have them in a 68. For replacement lap belts, any car belts will do; they bolt right on to anchors in the floor and on the hump. Some belt bolts might require a star tool; a large allen key might work. If you buy aftermarket belts, many are narrower (like airline buckles/belts), but they will work fine. If the belts you buy don't have anchor bolts, you can shop for a set online, too. Good luck.

The generic 3-point belts sold by many vendors, such as Glazier Nolan, will attach directly to the seat belt/shoulder anchors you already have. You should be able to got from opening the package to driving the car in under an hour.

No, they were optional in 67, but as of 68 they were required by federal law, All 68 Mustangs had them. Pretty clumsy setup, too, Ford just put two buckles and two belts in that year.

Thanks for all the input. Went ahead and bought the generic brand 3 points. Its a daily driver for me so I'd rather have the added safety of a shoulder harness.

Thanks!!

ok so I got the 3 points in the mail the other day.. started installing them and the fit just doesn't seem right. The retractable part doesn't "sit" properly and needs a hole drilled. My 68 has a shoulder hole pre drilled and a hole for 1 of the 2 places in the floor (left drivers side).

Looks like brackets need fabricated. Ugh.

Sorry your disappointed. Thats why I would have just found a used set of OEM belts. I figured the universal ones would require additional work to make them fit. The universal belts will never look right either. Also, if you fabricate brackets make sure everything is anchored really well or it will pull out in an accident and make the belts ineffective.
