289 backfiring
Ok so I've heard multiple reasons for an engine backfiring. I'm backfiring outta the mufflers at about 2500 rpms 2nd gear. I've cleaned the fuel filter, set the timing about 8*R, I'm beginning to think its my A/F ratio but I don't have a gauge. The plugs are new so they haven't had enough burned to show any signs of Rich/Lean. Engine ran rich before i changed the plugs. I've adjusted the fuel on the carb, although that could be my problem I'd just like some input before I go around messing with my A/F mixture.
Thanks Scott. And yes I was mistaken when i stated 8*R I meant 8*BTDC. Also, I'm not sure if this will affect any input but the engine has a mild cam. Not sure if the cam was degreed when installed came from a P/O who had it in a '33 Ford. Pretty Crazy.
Is there any reason to worry about backfiring? I've heard that it can blow holes in your mufflers but I'm not sure if thats just a bogus story?

my car was back firing for a long time when i was running insanely lean. didnt happen with my foot in the throttle but as soon as i let off to coast it would pop pop popop, turns out i was lean as hell
