Default front suspension idler arms

while i was changing my front wheel bearing on my 66 mustang yesterday-i grabbed the idler arm and was able to move it about one inch-is this normal or is the idler arm suppose to be taut-is there a process to adjust the arm and how does it affect the ride-thanks-tom

No, it is not normal, nor is it safe. The idler should have no vertical play. It won't affect ride quality because it's part of the steering, not suspension, but it will cause the car to wander and bump steer like mad. It will also make further steering diagnosis almost impossible.

Replace it ASAP, and try not to drive the car until you do. When you get it replaced, be sure to check for any tie rod end play. Once all play is eliminated, get the car aligned.

They're not absolutely necessary, anyway. I like mine, but they tend reduce the return-to-center function at low turn angles and speeds on manual steering cars.

Just use a good stock replacement and you'll be fine.
