Mixed Model Years
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help us with this:
My brother has a 1971 style mustang but the VIN number stamped on the body is actually a 1970 number. The 1970 VIN# is stamped on the fenderwell. But it is a 1971 body style, which is the same body style for 1971-73.
We checked with the theft guy at the highway patrol office and he states that we could get a title, but it would be for a 1970. But the body style is a 1971. Well, we are guessing a 1971 because it was closer to a 1970 than a 72 or 73 would be.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening? We were thinking maybe they made the car in 1970 and then actually completed in 1971. Not sure what is going on. Also wondering if it was made in 1970 to see how many they might be able to sell in 1971.
Thanks for your help with this.

I seen that with one of my Nova's. one plate said 71 the title said 72. The guy at the DMV said that he see that happen a lot with old cars. He said he doubt's it was anything illegal just a manufacturing date thing from the factory.
