Default New here!!

Hi yall, just joined the forum wanted to introduce myself. Figured this was the best place to do so instead of new members since i have a classic. So my baby is a 65 Coupe straight 6 200 bored out 40 over. Shes in great shape in my eyes, needs engine work. I drive her every day have owned her for 2 years. She was my second anniversary gift from my husband.

General maintenance i do myself, but the more difficult stuff my husband and dad help with. So you may see me asking questions if something has me stumped. Im not a complete moron about the car, i do my own oil, did the spark plugs the first time tonight myself. And yes she started right back up even better afterwards. Hoping to read up on the carburetor and tackle the adjustments on that this week. Then moving on to replacing the exhaust pipe, hopig to do this myself as well.I get alot of weird looks from people driving by and alot of people asking if i need help when im working on her. Love the car to death, waited 22 years for it.

Originially a California car still have the black tags it came off the line with. Eventually im using them for something, just put my texas plates on about a month ago. Cant think of anything else to say.

Here she is

Very nice, very clean looking . I'm glad you do your own work on the car.

What about the engine needs work on?

What is wrong with your exhaust pipe?

The timing needs to be adjusted. The carburetor (sp?) needs adjusting, spark plug one is fouling up bad, cleaned all of them tonight there was another fouling up as well but cant remember which. I think its the third tranny band is slipping its not shifting out of second.

I may be wrong on how im saying this but the exhaust pipe from the manifold is rusted out at the seal, whistling sound. So im ordering the replacement pipe. My dad replaced the seal a while back when we had the headers redone. Thats all i know of, she idles rough. Get up and go isnt great, but i cant ask for more with just a straight 6, and the tranny problem. Got a quote from a shop on the tranny 500 to replace the belt if that is the actual problem, but im pretty sure they would say somehting else is wrong also.

They may not, but it is my experience that something other then what is actually wrong is sad to be wrong so they get more money. Shes in top shape other than that my husband replaced the front seat upholestery and we had a friend do the head liner.

Ah I see. Well I had my 200 inline-6's head rebuilt recently and just got the car running about a week ago. My machinist was worried about how hot the engine was running since it cracked my exhaust manifold. The unleaded gasoline we use today runs around 250 degrees hotter than the leaded gasoline these cars were built to run on.

He told me to install a bigger head pipe (2.25 inch) coming from the exhaust manifold back to the muffler to help get the hot exhaust away from the manifold and engine. Cost me about $100 (that's including labor) to get that whole pipe replaced and fitted with a new one at a local muffler shop.

Do you know the history of the engine? You said it was bored over. Was it a complete rebuild and how long ago?

Welcome to the forum. The car looks to be in very good shape. Thats also cool that you try to do most of the work on it.

As for your exhaust issue, when you say header do you actually mean the manifold or does it have aftermarket headers on it? If it is the stock manifold you should be able to get the exhaust pipe from most Mustang parts stores like NPD or Mustangs Unlimited.

We had trouble getting ours not to leak at the doughnut and ended up finding an asbestos one that sealed it up.

As far as the 1 bbl carbs go. Do you have the Holley or the Autolite? I personally like the Autolite better.

When my 65 was still an I6 we went through several carbs either rebuilding them ourselves or buying rebuilt ones and having to return them a few times to get one that would actually run half way decent. We ended up buying a new Autolite one. That made a world of difference.

Canary94GT,
I do not think it was a complete rebuild, the guy we bought it from lived in california he purchased it in 2006. And it he didnt even know it was bored till we told him. I dont know how long ago it was done. But im also not sure if it was a complete rebuild, everything was pretty dirty under the hood when we bought it.

TX65Coupe
When i say header i meant the head redone. Still not used to all the terms for the car learning as i go. I believe it is the stock manifold, everything down there is pretty old. I will post a picture of the engine later today. I believe the manifold is stock. The pipe at the top where it connects and the donut goes or gasket goes not sure which term is correct is were it is rusted.

68 Mustang coupe,
Its a silver smoke grey, i have gotten into many a discussions with gentleman that say its not an original color. When my husband decoded the vin he found out it is. I even had one gentleman come up to me and say " Thats a silver smoke grey 65 " he had one when it first came off the line. He wanted to buy it, which i run across alot of when im driving it. No such luck on ever selling it they always ask and its always the same answer.
