Rebuild or Replace?? What did you do?
Oh man I would love to have a Garand... I have been drooling over those for years now. I avoid gun shops and shows because if I went there I would always be broke and the cars would sit and rot outside...
Update here.
I pulled the passenger side head, side that had the worst compression.
I did get a reading and they are bored .040" over. The wall are not scored in any way.
One machine shop I spoke with stated that the valves could have contributed to the low compresson. I did find any blown headgasket.
Now with .060 being a max and not a particular good amount to bore a 289 I wonder if my block is a boat anchor?
Tomorrow I will pull the other head.
Also from what I read in a book I received yesterday, that I DO NOT want a crate engine. Seems those are not the way to go.

Well a custom built engine is the way to go, it costs more to have someone put the whole thing together and do all the little stuff. When you reach a certain level its better to have them do it. For a daily driver like yours doing it yourself is much more fun and you can be sure of what is in it.
You could always build something that sounds and runs like this:

Might twist a Mustang in half though..

when i bought my car i pulled the 302 and got a rebuilt 302 from advanced auto parts, first 302 i got after about 1500 miles started acting up. pulled the heads to find the #1 piston was sloppy in the bore. engine was bored .060 over but the #1 piston was only a .040 over piston. they replaced that engine after a lot of arguments. The second engine pistons matched the bores but after a few thousand miles it pulled the press in rocker stud out of the head on the #7 exhaust rocker. that was when i bought a 351w from a junkyard. Had all the machine shop work done (bored, dipped, balanced,...) and rebuilt it my self.
Yes I have read that the crate rebuilts are not cool. It was mentioned in a book that the cylinders could have different bore sizes. So much for balance.
I am doing what you did except my motor was in the car.
Tomorrow I hope to lift out the block.
