Default Automatic Shifter Play

My automatic gear shifter has a lot of side to side play. I have just ordered the replacement bushings. How do you get the shifter off. I can't seem to get any wrench in there to loosen the retainer nut. Do I have to do this from under the car? Is there some special wrench I need?

I usually use a 3/8 drive socket wrench, but an ordinary offset box will do, too. There is a rubber plug in the housing to allow a straight shot with a longer socket wrench from underneath, but this is too much like work for me.
