I wouldn't waste my time on a MII setup. The factory front end is just as good. Just rebuild it and upgrade some of it.

I am in the beginning stages of the swap on my 68 I6 to a 302 and have a few questions.
How do you tell the difference between the I6 bellhousing and the V8 bellhousing?
How do you tell the difference between torque converters used for an
I6 application versus a V8?
What steering components need to be changed and why?

Thanks!

I can answer some of that. In 68 the steering from the I6 to the V8 are the same, including spindles. If you want 5 lug, and you should, all you have to do is change the drums or better find a good disc brake conversion. Tie rods, center link and idler arm are all the same. The front coil springs are weaker than the V8 springs and should be changed but you can run on your springs until you get around to it. You should also use a heavier sway bar. The I6 sway bar is a joke wan will cause sever body lean in a corner with the V8 intalled. The rear should be changed to an 8" 5 lug rear because the I6 rear won't hold up. The I6 bell housing looks kind of round and the V8 one does not. I'll post a pic of a V8 one. The torque converter I'm not sure about. The second pic has a T5 adapter installed. You won't need that unless you are planning on a T5. There is some talk on here about having to change the drive shaft too. I have never had to do that.

allgasnobrakes,
Not meaning to hijack your thread...... I promise

67t5ponycoupe,
I have everything you mention except the swaybar. Should I get a new one or is one from a donor car sufficient? (typical questions like metal fatigue, etc)
I have a C4, bell housing and torque converter from another 68 (289) but the C4 behind my I6 is in really good shape so if I can, I will us it. Is the C4 rebuild something I can attempt myself or is that strictly a transmission shop job? (just in case I need to rebuild the other one I have).
Thanks!

The sway bar from a V8 car will be good enough expecially if you are tryingto do this on a tight budget. The C4 behind your I6 is not as strong as as a V8 C4 do it is not advisable to use that. An automatic rebuild is not really a home rebuild. Some guys will tell you it is but I think it is best left to the proffesionals. You can sometimes get a good bench build for pretty cheap. That means you pull the trans and they rebuild it and you put it back it. I would use the C4 from behind the 68 V8 car. The bell housing I showed you is for a manual trans not an auto sorry.
