Straight six 200 performance options
OK, i have a 1966 mustang with a 200 in it. Its unbearably slow and i need some more power. My first step is to put some headers and an exhaust on it. Does that sound right? any other suggestions? Oh yeah and one more thing, am i going have to upgrade the rear end to 8'',9'', or not at all? Any suggestions would help if its brand or whatever just pleeease help me bring my six to life!
I doubt that six is going to produce anywhere near enough power to need an 8" no matter what you do to it. A 9" would be SUPER MEGA OVERKILL on a six. I say V8 swap, then you'll need a bigger diff.

You will be surprised.
Headers, exhaust, head, cam, 2 or 4bbl carb, port head, DSII or DUI distributor, turbo, supercharger, and T5 conversion.
I have bought stuff from Classic Inlines before and they are good.
EDIT: I have a 200 bored .040, DSII distributor, T5, and 2bbl carb. It is really fun to drive, but I am going to get a 331 stroker next year to replace it.

There are a surprising number of upgrades. Start with a 3-4 port splitter and dual headers, connected to stock GT 2" dual exhaust. Then switch to a T5 5-speed transmission. With the free-breathing exhaust, and the much better gear spread of the T5, you'll probably start thinking about upgrading the suspension and brakes. We can help with economical upgrades for that, too.
Low gears with a stock engine will go a long way to waking up a "sleepy six".
Problem is that there are no gears available (that I am aware of) for the 7.25" rear.
A junkyard swap to an 8" would allow for some gear changes.
Who knows if a 80s or 90s Mustang rear will physically fit in an early Mustang? (these would have 4 Lug)
The 5.0s did not use leaf springs right? Not a real problem if the width is right though.

I have a '65 6cyl manual and a V8 rear end (8-bolt) and it's not slow. I had to change out the 270 gears - the were way too high geared for the 6cyl - put in 355s and it moves right along - very torquey and fun to drive.

That is the shop for some insane aftermarket parts, the support forums and tons of other info are at http://www.fordsix.com/index.php
People that think our sixes are small and slow have never researched and didn't grow up with them. Set up 3 carbs, the intake manifolds sold here and a custom exhaust header along with some other mods listed..they are amazing. It would blow away almost any stock 8 of the same year...hehe. to bad mine going to be a daily driver for the kid (until he sees this site!)
Have fun!
