Default Project Super Snake

Im new to the forums and i have a question for you guys. I am looking for s Super Snake project car like the one at this site http://67mustangblog.com/2008/06/ I dont want to use an actual GT500 though. What would your guys suggestions be on what type of car i should use. I want it to be a 67 or 68. Would i need to get a fastback or is there anyway i could just amke a coupe look similiar? What would look the closest to that mustang without using an actual GT500?

I would try to start with the most solid fasback I could find, knowing that even then You'll end up doing a lot more than you originally intended. And that's not just for this project, its the same with any restoration of any car. You will find stuff you didn't know about and you'll have to fix it. If you've never cut a car apart before, converting a coupe to fastback isn't realistic.

Other than that, figure out a budget. No, I'm not kidding, that should be your first step. Sure we'd (I'd) love to have a perfect mustang, just the way we want it, but to get a car similar to the one on the web page, you're looking at about 35 grand if you can do almost all of it yourself. If you can't then start adding dollars.

So after deciding on a budget, get realistic and figure out what you'll really want. Do you need 815 HP? Have you ever driven anything like that? If not I want to be there the first time you mat the accelerator so I can see the wreck. I drive 650hp race cars and if you've never been in anything like that it will be a hairy ride. You can build a screaming stroker 427 for about 4 grand if you shop right and it'll walk damn near anything on the street. I bet you'll spend 5x that to get to 815hp. If you want 815, go for it, but it'll cost.

So after budget, and use, make 2 lists Wants & Needs. Needs are solid body, floors, suspension, wiring, lights etc... wants are custom console, custom paint, carbon fiber dash... Price out everything (realisticly on both lists) then balance the two lists to fit your budget. Now you've got a plan.

After you have aplan, start shopping for your car, get the best you can with as little damage or rot as you can find. Don't spend the money on a numbers matching car. Try to find one that is solid. Remember any stock stuff you can take off, you might be able to sell. My 67 came with a 65 vintage 289 swapped into it. I posted the 289 for sale with the date codes and it was bought by somebody doing a restore on a 65 that needed an engine from that time. I made enough to pay for the stroker kit and a good 351 block to build my stroker from and a good t-5. Spend and shop smart.

Ok so this was really long, sorry. But do your homework up front and in the end you'll be way better off, have had more fun, and maybe stayed close to budget. Fixing any car up is a blast, but do not kid yourself, it won't all be fun. Its the same thing I tell the guys after a rough night at the track, or after staying up till 4am to get the racecar ready for the next race. "If it was easy, everyone would be doing it"

Hey thanks that helped alot and ya my last stang was 575 to the wheels and ive raced a couple drag cars pushing some serious pnies so i can handle the power but im not really looking for the power in this car. I haver a 302 block bored out for a 347 stroker kit already waiting in my garage so i might just start there with that but not sure if i wanna charge it or not. I want power to smoke must cars on the street but i dont need a ridiculous amount of HP that is nto needed. 815 is way to much. Now all i have to do is find a good 67 fastback.

As said above, find the best cleanest most solid fastback you can, and go from there. 67 or 68 both are basically the same, very minor differences. The only differences between the regular fastbacks and gt500s are the cosmetics which you can add and they even sell the "Eleanor" body styling components in kits.

Order a catalog from them and start looking over some of the parts, lots of GREAT stuff in those catalogs.

Also you can use a coupe but the additional expense might not be worth it since you are not looking to build a show car. There is a company called dynacorn inc. who makes a complete fastback body shell that you can swap onto a coupe chassis. These sell for about 15k though last time I checked.
